This is what happens when you shake the cursor.

How it works

Three moves. Nothing to memorise.

01

Shake.

Flick the cursor left-right a few times and the popup opens right where you are.

02

Type.

Move onto the popup as it follows you, then type and press Return.

03

Vanish.

Shake again, press Esc, or click anywhere else and it's gone.

The details

One popup. Every detail.

Everything the popup does, annotated.

4

Six colours.

Yellow, green, blue, pink, purple or gray, one per note.

5

It follows you. Until you arrive.

Liquid Glass

Liquid Glass. The real thing.

On macOS 26 Tahoe the popup is a real Liquid Glass surface that darkens itself over light backgrounds. On macOS 13 through 15 it uses the standard material look.

FAQ

Questions, answered plainly.

What does it require?

macOS 13 Ventura or newer. It's a universal binary for Apple silicon and Intel, 2.7 MB on disk.

Does it need Accessibility or Input Monitoring permission?

No. ShakeNotes never asks for Accessibility or Input Monitoring.

Where are my notes stored? Is anything sent anywhere?

Notes are a plain JSON file at ~/Library/Application Support/ShakeNotes/notes.json. There is no account, no cloud and no telemetry.

It triggers too easily, or not easily enough.

Click the menu bar icon and pick Low, Medium or High sensitivity. You can also switch shake detection off there.

How do I hide the popup?

Shake again, press Esc, or click anywhere outside it. Pin it if you'd rather it stayed.

Can I open it with a keyboard shortcut?

Yes: bind shakenotes://popup in Shortcuts, Raycast or any launcher. The app also answers shakenotes://notes, shakenotes://new and shakenotes://add?text=….

Does it live in the Dock?

Only while a window is open. The rest of the time it's a menu bar icon.
